Since 1949, the United States has celebrated Mental Health Awareness Month (also known as “Mental Health Month”). The month is marked by media coverage, community gatherings, and film screenings.

The Mental Health America (MHA) group founded Mental Health Awareness Month in the United States in 1949. (then known as the National Association for Mental Health). Mental Health America publishes a toolbox of resources in mid-March each year to aid in the planning of outreach events during Mental Health Awareness Month. Throughout the month of May, MHA, its affiliates, and other mental health-related organizations participate in a variety of events centered on a particular topic each year.

The goal of Mental Health Awareness Month is to raise public awareness and educate people about mental illnesses such as depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder, which affect 18.1 percent of Americans; the realities of living with these conditions; and strategies for achieving mental health and wellness. It also tries to raise awareness of suicide, which can be triggered by certain mental conditions. Furthermore, Mental Health Awareness Month aims to minimize the stigma associated with mental diseases (negative attitudes and misunderstandings). A presidential edict established the month.

Mental Health America isn’t the only group that will be running campaigns in May. Many additional groups of a similar nature opt to hold awareness events during Mental Health Awareness Month. One such effort is National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, in collaboration with other non-profit and advocacy groups, is sponsoring this event.

Other months and weeks are set aside throughout the year to raise awareness about certain mental health issues or the mental health of various demographic groups (Minority Mental Health Month, Mental Illness Awareness Week, National Depression Screening Day, etc.).
